PHOSPHORIC ACID 75%

Phosphoric acid 75%

Phosphoric acid is used as a catalyst in biodiesel production due to its high acidity and ability to promote the esterification reaction, which is a critical step in producing biodiesel from high free fatty acid (FFA) feedstocks. In high FFA feedstocks, such as waste cooking oil and animal fat, the FFA content can be as high as 50%, which makes it difficult to convert the feedstock into biodiesel using alkaline catalysts. Phosphoric acid is an effective acid catalyst that can convert the FFA into biodiesel through the esterification reaction. Phosphoric acid has a pKa of 2.1 and can be used in either homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis, with the latter being preferred due to easier separation and reusability. Additionally, phosphoric acid has the added benefit of being able to tie up heavy metals that can act as catalyst poisons in solid catalyst esterification. In summary, the use of phosphoric acid in biodiesel production is essential for converting high FFA feedstocks into biodiesel through the esterification reaction. Its effectiveness as a catalyst, ability to tie up heavy metals, and low cost make it a popular choice in the industry.
